You Wouldn't Steal A Car

biscuit image

Back in 2004, we began to see a public information film, entitled You Wouldn't Steal A Car, played in cinemas and ahead of the menu of DVDs. The purpose of the trailer was to discourage illegal copying of film and distributed media. Today, when I hear yet another person in business tell me that they want to build and manage the website ourselves, this well-known campaign by the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) immediately sprung to mind.

Now, the strategy behind this ad campain has always been a little flawed, because the criminals they're trying to discourage are, in-fact, the very people who might steal a car, a TV or a video etc. Nevertheless, the public information film became firmly lodged in the consciousness of many, myself included.

To the point that, today, when I heard that a professional services business wanted to build and design their own website, I felt a very strong urge to create a parody of FACT's trailer with the message that: You wouldn't want to build your office furniture. You wouldn't want to build your coffee machine. You wouldn't want build your company car. So why would you think that wanting to build your first website for your business is a great idea?
