Goodbye google.co.uk

biscuit image

I've just read a report that Google will soon drop its use of google.co.uk and redirect requests for this domain to google.com in an effort to simplify the user experience.

I feel a weightier blog post brewing on the subject of the domains but, for now, I'd like to quickly comment on this and offer some reassurance that you shouldn't be concerned that this change will affect your search engine performance.

Years ago, Google may have factored the domain that requested the Search into their search results. One can appreciate that a Search from google.co.uk is a signal that the searcher may prefer more UK based results. What the switch away from google.co.uk to google.com strongly indicates is that Google can and does use other metrics to geolocate the search and tailor the results.

Naturally, if you'd like to discuss any aspect or your website's optimisation for Search do please drop us a line.
