What Does It Mean To Work With A Brand?

Yesterday, Sharon and I sat-through an hour-long presentation upon the value of brand to a business. A presentation that, in an investment seminar, completely failed to explore thoughts about calculating a value. The presentation's core was that 'brand was everything' and attempted to express 'everything' with a mass of sexy corporate keywords which had been thoughtfully prepared in a food processor. So, to save you having to experience an hour like that, here's our take on what it means to work with a brand.

A brand is not something you own or control but may only work to influence. A brand is not branding. Brand is the sum total of what people think and feel about what you do.

Building a strong brand identity is a critical aspect of marketing any business. When you put a logo on something, you're branding it, you're saying 'I own/made this'. That logo is the business' own self-identity. When you get that identity so right and so strong you can throw anything at it. You can try your best to smash it, you can try your worst to scare it - but you'll NEVER break it, ever.
