Some businesses may need to notify Customers and service users of disruption due to staff shortages or site difficulties. Ideally you'd be able to message everyone to let them know what to expect but not everyone's on the same platform.
It strikes me that, although it might appear to be a suggestion to open-up yet another channel of communication but, there's something to be said for the role of RSS in this snowy scenario.
Being able to post an update that everyone has the ability of receiving (via a 'news' app) without requesting that they have to join or login to a social network feels, somehow, cleaner.
